Common sense tells the majority of women what they can and can not eat/drink when pregnant...but that doesn't mean that you aren't going to have some bizarre cravings. I'm talking about "My Strange Addiction" kind of bizarre, not just our everyday pickles and ice cream kind of thing. For some women, these cravings can be extreme, unhealthy and point to a larger medical issue.
I'm not a smoker but when I was pregnant, I actually liked the smell of cigarette ashes. It wasn't what I would call an extreme craving for ashes, but it was weird enough to make me feel like a freak of nature. I actually found out awhile after that I had low iron. A supplement in addition to my prenatal vitamins quickly got things back to normal (aka- me thinking cigarettes were gross again).
Craving non food items is often called pica (www.babycenter.com) and should be brought to your doctor's attention. Here is a short list of some of the totally crazy things some women with pica crave:
1. Dirt or Clay
2. Ashes or Cigarette Butts
5. Baking Soda
6. Paint or Paint Chips
10. Coffee Grounds
These cravings are actually more common then you think so don't be ashamed if you've had thoughts of eating spoonfuls of baking soda while making a batch of chocolate chip cookies or wondering what your powdered laundry detergent would taste like.
Now if you have actually found yourself licking an ashtray or eating a candle, you should be ashamed and need to seek medial attention immediately. LOL
