I recently heard a news report about women eating their placenta....so, of course, I was enticed.
Here is what I found:
You can eat your placenta by....
- Placenta Encapsulation--ie: popping a pretty little pill.
- Making a home cooked meal, just as you would with any other meat. (Here are some recipes.)
- Grab your blender and make a raw-placenta smoothie. (Tough Tummy Required)
Here is where you can find a "placenta Encapsulator":

SO, I had to ask, why in the world would someone choose to eat their placenta!????
I was surprised to find all of the health benefits:
- Decrease baby blues and postpartum depression
- Increase and enrich breast milk
- Increase energy
- Decrease postpartum bleeding
- Decrease iron deficiency
- Decrease insomnia or sleep disorders

--There have been no official scientific studies to confirm or deny the benefits of eating the placenta.--
I did ask to see the placenta after my son was born. (Yes, I know that is a little weird, but I was curious.) I did not get any cravings to take a bite out of it, take it home to bury it under a tree, or ask to dehumidify it to snack on in the middle of the night.
BUT...after doing my research, I now understand why women do this and will now be non-judgmental. (However, I still think it is gross to eat raw.) Who knows...maybe I will pop a little placenta pill one day.
Actress January Jones did it!
She claims it helped her 'bounce back after child birth'.
