Baby Monitors

Deciding on the right baby monitor was my most stressful decision.  Do I go for the video monitor?  A regular monitor with great sound?  Or do I register for the Angel Monitor??

We actually did not receive a baby monitor at our baby showers.  We kept our baby in our room for the first few months so we decided to wait to buy this higher priced item.  It turned out that I had major anxiety over SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).  So, for us, the Angel Monitor would be the best choice, especially in baby's first 6 months.  After six months, I do think that a video monitor would be more beneficial so we could see what exactly is is going on in baby's room.

Here are the top four options for baby monitors according to consumersearch.com:

Best Digital Monitor
Operates on 1.9 GHz frequency-eliminates interference from other electronics.  Eliminates the chance of possible eavesdropping (my neighbor always hears us, so this can be a big deal!) Top rated!!
Price:  $105.00

Best Basic Monitor
Sony Baby Call Nursery Monitor NTM-910YLW
Costs significantly less than the digital baby monitor, but is subject to interference with electronics and other baby monitors.  If your neighbor has a similar monitor they can possibly eavesdrop.  This monitor comes with rechargeable batteries as well as a power adaptor.  Top rated for a less expensive monitor!
Price: $43.00

Best Video Monitor
Experts say that parents do not need a video monitor, but it can be very reassuring.  This monitor has the best reviews for video monitors.   This monitor has a color display as well as 900MHz audio monitoring and works up to 350 feet.
Price:  $129.98

Best Movement Monitor
Experts say that parents do not need this type of monitor and it does not prevent against SIDS, it can give parents a peace of mind.  This brand is the most basic and affordable option.  It has an audible alert to hear each of your baby's movements.  An alarm will go off if baby does not move for a certain period of time.  The biggest complaint on this monitor is that there are false alarms.
Price:  $85

Parents.com provides 5 helpful tips when choosing a baby monitor:
1.  Choose a model with frequency over 900 MHz to reduce interference and increase clarity.
2.  Choose a model with a prominent low battery light.
3.  Choose a model that has a wireless option so you can bring monitor with your around the house to finish chores or outside.
4.  Choose a model with a sound-activated light.  This way you can see if there is noise in the nursery even if you are vacuuming or listening to music.
5.  Consider a video monitor so you can see at a glance if baby is still sleeping peacefully.

Do you have a favorite baby monitor??
