I always hated carrying a diaper bag. I have the tendency
to overdo most things (no way...right?!) and I think I need a shoulder
replacement because my bag always weighed 100 pounds.
Carrying a diaper bag can make you feel like Mary Poppins...kind of like packing to go to the hospital, but what do you REALLY need in there?

We'll break it down for you by roughly by age:
Newborn - 3 Months:
- The appropriate amount of diapers that you'll need to go out. Notice I said APPROPRIATE. If you are leaving the house for 2 hours, chances are you won't need 10 diapers.
- A case full of wipes.
- Changing pad.
- Changing pad.
- Bottle and formula (amount depends on how long you will be gone) OR nursing cover depending on how baby eats.
- Burp rag or two.
- 2 pacifiers (in case one falls in a toilet...true story).
- Bibs and an extra outfit (in case of spit up or bad diaper situation).
- Plastic bag to store dirty clothing if the situation above occurs.
- Small blanket if it is cold out.
- Small blanket if it is cold out.
3 - 9 Months:
- All of the above
- A couple of chew toys for teething.
- Food if baby is on solids (rice cereal, can of baby food...etc)
- Feeding supplies for above. We love Take and Toss
brand for our diaper bags because you can pitch (or recycle!) them if you need to but they can also be thrown back in your bag and washed at home.
- Small toys with links
.
6 - 12 Months (and beyond):
- Diapers, wipes, changing pad.
- Bottles or sippy cups.
- Bibs.
- 2 pacifiers.
- Comfort item (think blanket, favorite teether...)
- A few small toys/books and links.
- Snack cups and age appropriate snacks.
- Food items (feeding supplies and food like above).
DON'T PACK
- Toys until baby needs them (example- newborns do NOT need books).
- Excessive amounts of milk/formula and diaper.
- Diaper rash creme and/or meds like Tylenol (unless you know baby needs it when you leave the house).
- The same toys all the time (baby will get bored of seeing the same things).
- Sun screen or hats/mittens unless you are experiencing the appropriate weather to do so (despite what you may think, your 3 month old doesn't need a winter hat when it is 60 degrees out).
Remember that you can always keep extra diapers, outfits, toys, blankets...etc in the car! And don't freak out if you forget something at home. You can always run into a drug store if you need something quickly (unless you forgot your wallet...the you should probably just go home).

We have had "blow-ups" with honest diapers, but that was the indication we needed a bigger size, as it travelled up the back of the diaper and wouldn't have been an issue if the diaper was slightly bigger. We've gone from NB to Size 1 and now on Size 2 and almost ready for Size 3. (Knock on wood) With Size 2, she hasn't any blow-ups thus far.
